In response to the recession, an inventive B&B in Bristol is successfully filling local spare bedrooms with professionals working away from home. The Base Bed and Breakfast in Fishponds, has been operating as a commission based booking agent for homeowners looking to earn an extra income from their spare rooms without the hassle of a full time lodger. The idea has been successfully trialled with a handful of such 'host rooms'. The owners themselves said "The host rooms have been much more popular than we expected." Most bookings are from Monday to Friday only and on a room only basis, which means the hosts get to have their spare room back for the weekends or for when family and friends are visiting. Yet the income for the hosts is still comparable to that of having a full time lodger. A recently signed up host commented "It is going very smoothly for us, we have been booked almost every week and it's nice getting the payments every Friday." One guest from Oxford said “For me its better value than the alternative of renting a room in a shared house with bills and committing to a contract. I can book by the week as and when I need to. I've stayed in a few host rooms now and I know they will be of a good standard.” Unlike most similar online schemes which match people to services, the winning difference here is clearly that the business is making the extra effort to visit each host in person for an informal interview and to ensure the rooms meet minimum standards. Additionally, hosts are given the flexibility to choose which kind of guest they would like, which nights of the week they are willing to book, and they can also choose to 'close' their room as and when they need to. With these questions already answered, bookings can be confirmed immediately. The business takes a commission for taking care of all the administration and pays the hosts directly into their bank accounts every Friday, with hosts usually earning £72 to £90 per week depending on whether they let for 4 or 5 nights a week.
